Types of Grading

Categorize work based on question or concept

Why

[TAs] grading practices can shape students’ approaches to problem solving and learning (Marshman et al. 2018)

– Provide meaning to the grade

– Help students reflect on their work

– Avoid students feeling “nickle and dimed”

– Help you provide more meaningful feedback

Links between incomplete, inconsistent, or vague feedback and negative emotional responses(Shields 2015)

Note: Feedback also needs to be on time!

What is the purpose of student feedback?

Feedback Example

Question on Simulation: In as much detail as possible, DESCRIBE the simulation scheme for

(a) conducting a hypothesis test for evaluating whether the average air pollution is different between the United States and Canada.

Solution: Take all air pollution values from US and Canada, and mix them all together. Randomly shuffle observations into new US and Canada groups of the same sizes as the original US (842) and Canada group (155). Next, take the mean air pollution for each group, and subtract them. Do this process a large amount of times to create a null distribution.

Feedback Example (Think + Share)

What questions may the student have after receiving this type of feedback?

Student Answer: To determine whether the average air pollution levels are different between the US and Canada, we can conduct a hypothesis test. The first step in our process is to define our null and alternative hypothesis. We could then specifically use the simulation scheme of a bootstrap technique. This involves resampling the data and calculating the mean differences for both the US and Canada from the resampled data.

Feedback:

– missing mixing data together or assume the null hypothesis to be true (-1)

– missing randomly shuffle or permute observations to two new groups (-1)

– missing size 842 and 155 (-1)

Takeaways

– Rubric items are useful for us, and may not be as useful for students

– When writing feedback, ask yourself “why” from the student perspective

– Pull up a notepad to write feedback in that can be easily used to copy-paste across assignments

Things to think about

– Your feedback is a critical learning component of any course

– Think about your feedback as a teaching tool

– Put yourself in the student’s shoes

– Clearly communicate expectations and the why behind them

– Help them discover

– Think about tone

Tone of Feedback

Students tend to respond best to feedback that’s candid, empathetic, supportive, encouraging, constructive, and respectful (Enquist 1996; Fink 2013; Gottschalk K. 2004). By contrast, students respond worse to feedback that’s interpreted as sarcastic, cruel, accusatory, condescending, disrespectful, pessimistic, or patronizing (Enquist 1999; Taggart and Laughlin 2017).

We need to be able to clearly and effectively communicate feedback to students in-person… and it may be uncomfortable at first…

People believe that they can learn, achieve, and break through academic barriers through hard work, dedication, and learning with others.

Why GitHub

From my experience, this is the most important part of introducing GitHub to a course

Real world collaboration

– Opportunity to practice your communication skills

Why not Google Docs?

Students & GitHub

– Merge conflicts are interpreted as always bad

– Students avoiding merge conflicts have a harder time fixing them

– Students tend to use Google docs or other collaborative spaces

Suggestions

– Help students understand if their error is Github, Quarto, or Code related. This may seem trivial to you, but this is critical when working with introductory students

– Walk through merge conflicts with students in office hours

– Reach out for help with Git (Slack; Head TA; Instructor)

– Students commit and push at the start of the semester, but don’t use pull until group work. Introduce pull to them early
